    Strong first quarter for Mothercare

A strong performance in its international and direct businesses led maternity and nursery products retailer Mothercare to a 21-percent rise in first-quarter sales. Catalogue and web sales surged 78 percent, while international franchisee sales were up 50 percent.

    Oka posts 24-percent sales increase

For the first six months of its fiscal year, home decor cataloguer/retailer Oka Direct enjoyed a 24-percent rise in year-on-year sales. The company will open its 12th showroom next month, in the Cotswolds.

Double-digit sales, EBITDA rises at TM Lewin

Tailored-apparel retailer/cataloguer TM Lewin reported a 14-percent increase in annual sales, to £63.4 million for the year ended 23rd February. EBITDA rose 21 percent, to £11.0 million. The good news continued into the first quarter of the current fiscal year, with sales up 16 percent on last year.

Glasses Direct teams with Daily Express, OK!

Eyewear retailer Glasses Direct has joined forces with newspaper and magazine publisher Northern & Shell to launch a white-label offering. Nine Northern & Shell publications, including newspapers Daily Express and Daily Star and OK! magazine, are involved in the promotion, which will see the launch of cobranded websites and catalogues powered by Glasses Direct. The first of the websites went live last month.

    Bertelsmann selling BCA

Germany-based media giant Bertelsmann is selling some of its DirectGroup book clubs, including its UK operation BCA. Bertelsmann divested its North American operations earlier this month.

    Studio relaunches website

General-merchandise catalogue Studio, part of Findel’s mail order unit, has relaunched its website, 24Studio.co.uk. The revamped site features tabbed navigation and a less cluttered design. The company worked with ecommerce consultancy Logan Tod & Co.

    Weak B2C sales at Straight

Straight, which sells recycling supplies to organisations and consumers, reported that for the first half of the year, sales within its retail division were down 46 percent from the first half of 2007. The business-to-consumer unit includes the Evergreener website. Because of the poor results, during the next two months Straight will conduct a strategic review of that portion of its business. On the positive side, sales in its core b-to-b unit rose 11 percent.
